Mount Faber
For our last full day in Singapore, we made sure to fill it up with as many activities as we could. However, we were a little reluctant getting up in the morning after the concert the day before. Once we finally got ourselves going, we took the MRT to Dhoby Ghaut and walked the remainder of the way to the National Museum of Singapore.
Since we already went to the Asian Civilisation Museum last year, the National Museum wasn’t too high on my list of places to visit. However, I’m glad I changed my mind about it, because I really enjoyed going through the exhibits. Once we got there, we went straight to the Singapore History Gallery. We got fitted with headphones, then slowly made our way inside the exhibit. In the main gallery, there are two routes you can take – the ‘Events’ path or the ‘Personal’ path. Both were similar, but the narration was slightly different. In the end it really didn’t matter because I criss-crossed back and forth between the two routes.
As we were walking through the exhibit, my sister and I somehow got separated. I think I was so into the history that I completely forgot she was with me. Hehe. A couple of overpriced text messages later, we finally found each other and made it through the remainder of the History Gallery. Then we went to explore the Living Galleries, which were broken into Film, Fashion, Food and Photography. All the exhibits were really intriguing, although the Food gallery made me extremely hungry.
It was already past lunch hour when we left the museum, so we decided to head over to Bugis to find a place to eat. Initially we walked over to Haji Lane to see if there were any good restaurants. However, aside from Middle Eastern cafes, there wasn’t a big selection. Luckily as we walked down the end of the street, we found a noodle shop in the corner. We stopped and had shrimp and pork noodles, along with some fried appetizers. I think these were tofu and fish balls?
After lunch we walked back to Haji Lane and spent some time going through the boutique shops. Initially I thought it would be pricey inside, but I was surprised to find so many reasonably priced items. I bought a dress for myself for less than $20! We also went inside an ice cream store called Pluck, which my friend Sherly had recommended.
Later on we continued walking past the Sultan Mosque and some of the other side streets in Bugis. Then we decided to take the MRT over to Harbourfront to shop at Vivocity. We stopped by the food court first to get a snack – pork bone soup and kueh tutu. (Yes I know, pork bone soup isn’t really considered a snack. LOL.) Afterwards we went up to the rooftop terrace. I took my shoes off and splashed around in the wading pool. I think every mall needs a rooftop wading pool. =P
Since there wasn’t much else in Vivocity, we decided to head up to Mount Faber early. After buying our extremely overpriced cable car tickets, we took the elevators up to the platform. It was completely empty when we got there, so we didn’t have to wait in line to board. The ride to Mount Faber took about 10 minutes. The sun was still out, so the view from the top was quite nice. Once we got up, we walked around trying to find something to do. We soon realized that aside from the restaurants, there’s absolutely nothing to do in Mount Faber. We initially followed one of the paths down the mountain, but it was too hot out, so we took a seat on a bench. We ended up staying to watch the sunset.
Once the sun went down, we walked back up and decided to have an early dinner. We got a seat on the patio which had a great view of the city. The atmosphere at night was definitely diferent than what it had been in the day.
It was still early when we finished dinner. Instead of heading back to Harbourfront, we decided to stop by Sentosa, since our cable car passes covered a round trip. I was expecting Sentosa to be exactly the same as last year, but I was surprised to see it decorated for Halloween. Everyone was dressed in costumes and there were line ups everywhere to get into these ‘haunted’ attractions. If I had known in advance, I would have come dressed up too! But even without a costume, it was still fun to walk around and get into the Halloween spirit. It’s definitely not something you get to see everyday!
