Faye Wong 2011 Concert Tour
I’ve waited more than 10 years for this moment. I can’t believe I actually had the chance to hear her perform live!
On the day of the concert, my sister and I went out to explore a bit of Little India in the morning. We grabbed an early lunch at the Food Republic in Orchard before heading off towards Kallang Leisure Park for k-box with several Fayenatics. Karaoke is always fun when everyone knows how to sing the same songs! After ‘warming up’ for about four hours, we headed downstairs to grab dinner at Thai Express, where we met up with more Fayenatics. It was getting really busy at the mall as people were starting to show up for the concert (the concert venue is next door). After dinner, in which one really nice Faye fan insisted on paying for everyone, we all headed over to the stadium together.
The atmosphere was really high as we approached the stadium. Many fans were already gathering together. Shirley got everyone for a group photo before we slowly made our way inside. I was so stroked to be sitting up front for the concert! (Well, only because I paid a small fortune for the concert tickets, hehe.) Fifth row!! The organizers prepared gift bags for all the attendees, which was super cool because I never had one before. Everyone got their own glow stick and poster which came inside a Faye branded bag.
As it neared starting time, the lights started to dim. It was quite a sight glancing around, since all the glow sticks were lit up in every inch of the venue. The curtains at the front of the stage suddenly dropped and Faye emerged singing ‘Date’. It was memorizing seeing her up close. While her voice was a little shaky at the beginning, I was already getting teary just from seeing her in person. As the stage opened up, you could see the chandelier microphone stand. Faye was wearing a white outfit with her hair combed back. She didn’t have the headscarf like she did at her previous concerts, but I actually liked it better that way.
I think Faye’s voice got noticeably steadier as the night wore on. All the outfits she had on afterwards were gorgeous as well. Most of her costumes consisted of two layers, so she would peel off the top to reveal another outfit underneath. Along with her hair and makeup, her transformations each time were amazing.
When the stage rose up during the second segment, pink confetti was spewing from the ceiling. The floor was like a sea of pink afterwards. She sang a string of songs like Dream Person, Angel, Love Letter to Myself, Single Room Double Bed and Perfect Indian.
During the middle of the show, she moved onto her ‘rock’ segment. As she sang ‘Let Love’, she made a small mistake in the middle of the song. It wasn’t completely noticeable, but she missed the intro to one of the verses. She made such a funny face afterwards! The next song she sang was ‘Love’s Blossom’. She sang into the megaphone as the screens behind her flashed a series of dazzling graphics.
Afterwards she sang ‘Wing of Light’. It was during this song that I suddenly became really emotional. I’m not sure what triggered it, but there were so many thoughts running through my head during the song. First of all it was so surreal that she was actually standing in front of me. I never imagined I would have the chance to watch her perform live. Secondly, this concert could very well be my first and last one. I may never have an opportunity like this again. With all these mixed emotions, I felt like I was ready to cry right in the middle of the concert. Luckily though, I didn’t actually cry. (Because you know, that would be very embarrassing.) But I was seriously on the verve of balling.
After that segment ended, Faye came back out sitting on top of a swing that took her up to the roof of the concert hall for her song ‘Sky’. It was so beautiful seeing everything lit up from the top. When she finally came down, she returned to the stage and continued singing. The lasers and the lighting accompaniment were spectacular during this segment.
For her second last costume change, she re-emerged sitting inside a silver ball. When it rotated to the front, the edges of the ball opened up to reveal a flower. She was singing ‘New Tenant’ and it was just spellbounding hearing it live.
As it neared the end of the concert, Faye once again came back on stage through a hole in the front. The floor of the stage seemed to lift up, revealing a mirror underneath. It made it look like Faye was a doll singing inside a music box. Her last song was ‘Flower on the Other Shore’. I didn’t know at the time that it would be her last song, but it seemed very fitting for her to end it there. When the last line was done, Faye disappeared from sight as the music kept playing. Slowly the lights began to brighten as the song shifted to ‘Heart Sutra’. Finally, all the lights inside the concert hall turned on and it marked the end of the show.
Overall, the entire concert experience was magical. It was such a treat to be able to hear her sing live after waiting all these years. Most of us were still on concert high after the show, so a group of us went off to Newton Circus for supper at the hawker centre. I don’t know how many of us were there, but we all managed to fit into two rows of tables. It was great chatting with fans from around the world. It was past midnight when we left Newton. I’m so grateful for the hospitality from SG fans. I’m not sure if I’ll have a chance to watch her perform again, but I will definitely treasure this experience. Thank you so much to all the wonderful SG Fayenatics for making this happen!

I understand how you feel as a fan. We were nearly moved to tears when we went to Kokuritsu and heard the dorks’ voices and we were only outside of the venue. How much more you, seeing Faye performed right before your very eyes.
The production looks impressive! I’m sure you got more than what you paid for. =)
It was definitely worth every penny! I’m so glad for the experience. =)
