Mahone Bay & Lunenberg

Mahone Bay & Lunenberg

Getting back to my East Coast trip. My favourite spot out of all the scenic locations we visited had to have been Mahone Bay. I would say it was definitely worth making the drive from out from Halifax to spend the day there.

Early that morning up we picked up our rental car and drove straight to Mahone Bay. Driving up towards the visitor’s centre we could already see the row of three churches aligned in front of the harbour. The view looked like it came straight from a postcard.

After arriving at the visitor’s centre and getting our guide maps, we parked the car close to the churches and walked into town. Since it was such a nice day out, I suggested renting bikes and cycling along the trails. We found a rental shop called Sweet Ride Cycle and paid $23 for a half day rental, which included helmets. The owners were really nice and pointed out routes we could take. You could actually ride all the way to Lunenberg from Mahone Bay, which was where we were going that evening, but we decided to take the scenic route and ride alongside the harbour instead.

After practicing a few laps in the parking lot, we finally set off on the trail. We first cycled down Oakland Road and then took Indian Pointe Road. We rode at a leisurely pace and spent some time taking photos as we went along. For lunch we had a small picnic in front of a church. After we finished eating we decided to head back towards town.

Later that afternoon we visited the Settlers Museum and shops. Once we finally returned our bikes, we picked up our car and drove towards Lunenburg. Lunenburg is a port town which was designated as a Unesco World Heritage Site. The view of the port and colonial buildings was spectacular.

We dropped first off our luggage at the Brigantine Inn then grabbed dinner at the Grand Banker restaurant. The seafood pasta and platter we ordered were both equally yummy, although the oyster appetizer we got seemed a touch small for the price we paid. Haha.

After dinner we took a walk across the boardwalk just as the sun was starting to set. It was beautiful witnessing the sight in person. It was a nice way to end the evening.
