Historic Tour

Historic Tour

For our first full day in Halifax, we started the morning at the Halifax Citadel. The complex is actually very large and there’s many areas and exhibits to explore inside. We first joined a walking tour, which gave us a more detailed insight into why the fort was built and how it was used as a point of defence. We saw some gun firing demonstrations, the changing of the guards, and stayed for the ceremonial firing of the noon cannon. Overall we had a solid 2.5 hours inside the complex.

For lunch we walked over to the harbour and got food from one of the stalls outside. I bought a fish burger ($5.50) and a cup of clam chowder soup ($6.50) from The Battered Fish. I highly recommend trying both. Since it was a nice day out, we also bought tickets for a boat tour later that afternoon.

Lunch

After lunch we went and explored the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic. I can’t say it was worth the admission price, but at least it killed some time for us as we waited for our boat tour. Actually I think the accompanying admission aboard the CSS Acadia was more interesting than the museum itself.

Finally at 4:30pm we boarded the Tall Ship Silva, which took us on an hour long cruise along the seaside. We got a close glimpse at George’s Island and its lighthouse and some of the passengers got a chance to haul lines with the crew members. I think after 20 minutes of getting wind blown, I was ready to go back to shore. Lol.

Once the tour was over we took a stroll along the historic buildings by the harbour. It was getting late by the time we finally stopped for dinner at Great Wall Chinese restaurant. After having so many days of pub food we finally caved and got Chinese food. Haha. But at least dinner only cost $32.60 for two people. =D
