[Mis]adventures in Tokyo

Day two in Tokyo – MAYDAY concert!! I think I’ve waited for this day since I got the tickets back last year. I was so excited to finally watch them perform live!

Backtrack to the morning – Krista and I managed to pull ourselves out of bed after crashing out the night before. I walked down to McD’s to grab breakfast for both of us. Krista insisted that all she wanted was an orange juice, but I ended up buying both a mega muffin combo and hot cakes. I don’t know how I managed to be that hungry in the morning, but I’m certain I ate enough for the both of us that day. (Certainly for dinner that evening HEHE.)

After grabbing what we needed for the day, we met Tomomi downstairs in the lobby. It was my first time seeing her since she moved back to Japan and I was super happy we could hang out in Tokyo together. Before we even made our way to the Shinjuku Station we had to stop by the pharmacy to grab a few things. Little did we know, we had a minor incident at the pharmacy. Tomomi would probably be mortified if I mention what happened, so I’ll spare the details. I wish my katakana pronunciation was better so we could have avoided the entire mess. LOL. Kokoro kara moushiwake gozaimasen deshita. m(_ _)m

After that embarrassing episode, the first thing we did was hop on the train over to Harajuku. We spent the morning shopping on Takeshita Dori and also dropped by the StayReal store. We also went into this really swanky boutique shop where all of us stared at this one salesman with a Matsujun-like perm. Krista and I once again embarrassed the crap out of Tomomi. I apologize for that too. =P

Stay Real

Later we walked all the way to Shibuya and got lunch in a building with extremely sketchy elevators. (The doors slammed on Krista as we were leaving and I nearly died laughing.) For lunch I ordered the sanru-mu hiyankake set. Tomomi pretty much helped me order everything cause there were so many selections! Luckily everything was really yummy. After leaving the restaurant, we were finally on our way to Odaiba.

Lunch

The concert was scheduled for the afternoon. Once we arrived we had to get in line with the hundreds of other fans outside of Zepp. For some reason it was unnaturally cold that day, so I’m sure everyone was freezing while waiting for the doors to open. Luckily they were really organized and started letting groups in by their ticket numbers. By the time we managed to squeeze past the crowd and get inside, we beelined for the lockers to drop off our coats, then we made it inside the arena where we got spots near the center. Considering it was a standing concert, it was definitely better to stand by the hand rails so we could actually lean on something for the duration of the show.

While we waited for the concert to start, the venue started to fill up. We spotted many Chinese and Japanese fans alike. Krista was by far the only Caucasian person there until we found another person who looked equally out of place. (Not to mention, he totally towered over all the tiny Asians.) Just as the concert was starting, we noticed the seats in the balcony being filled. Even though I don’t know them very well, I could totally recognize that it was GLAY being led into the VIP section. It was so amazing that they were actually closer to us than Mayday. Hehe.

Finally the lights dimmed and the show started! It was awesome to see Mayday perform in person. I was having a hard time trying to peer pass all the heads in front of me, but I could definitely hear them. I was a little disappointed during the introductions because none of the members except for Monster attempted to greet the crowd in Japanese. Monster was sooooo adorable, but he kept forgetting his lines and said ‘chotto matte’ about three times. <3 The set list for the show was quite good and all three of us were waving our lightsticks to the music. Since Zepp has a capacity of around 2,000, we were pretty close to the band. However, one of these days I would love to go to an arena concert with 50,000 fans in the audience just to see the difference.  Zepp Tokyo

Ashin sounded pretty decent throughout the concert and I loved the member solos while they sang Sun Wu Kong. They performed quite a few older songs, but they ended the show with lots of new ones like Leaving the Surface of the Earth and Noah’s Arc. I was so happy with the set list. Towards the end Ashin thanked everyone for coming and also gave a shout out to all his friends in the balcony. He did this awesome imitation of GLAY, who had their sunglasses on and arms crossed throughout the entire concert. LOL.

Finally when it was over we all filed out of the concert hall. It was hard fighting through the crowds to get a shot of the flower baskets that everyone sent. There were ones from GLAY, flumpool and B’z. Once we made it out of Zepp, we went on a hunt for a place to eat. I had told Tomomi I wanted sushi, even though I was fully aware that Krista does not eat it. It was funny seeing her starring longingly at the yakiniku place next door as we waited to get into the restaurant.

I ordered a sushiko sushi set along with a chanwanmushi. Krista had a bottle of beer and ordered the only cooked item on the menu. I would have felt more bad if only I wasn’t so amused. HAHA. It was also hilarious when the waiter came over to clear our plates. Both her and I handed him our dishes, and while he thanked me with an ‘arigatou’, he turns to her and says ‘thank you’ in English. Sooooo funny.

Dinner

Anyway, it was an extremely long day by the time we made it back to Shinjuku. It was so great seeing Tomomi and Mayday! I really hope we get to see another show together in the future.  =)
