Skagway

Skagway

Skagway was our first port of call in Alaska. Since we didn’t have any excursions planned for the day, we had plenty of time to leisurely stroll along the streets and take in all the sights and sounds.

After we left the ship, we followed the crowds towards downtown Skagway. There were three other ships at the port that morning, so everywhere we went it was packed with tourists. The downtown area in Skagway is very small and you could literally walk through the entire town in an hour. Some of the shops like the Red Onion Saloon were famous back in the days of the gold rush. I really liked the store fronts in Skagway because it still preserved that old-time feel.

By lunchtime, we had seen pretty much everything in Skagway. I was lucky because we happened to stop by an internet cafe on the way back to the ship. It was quite a relief to go online after being deprived of internet connection for so many days. I think I was experiencing withdrawal symptoms. Haha. Afterwards, we headed back on the ship to grab lunch. There wasn’t much to do afterwards, so we pretty much relaxed for the remainder of the day.

Overall Skagway was a really lovely place to visit. I’m not too much of a small town person, but it must be quite a sight to wake up surrounded by mountains. The scenery was definitely my favourite part of visiting all the ports. =)
