Weekends in Toronto

Weekends in Toronto

With summer just around the corner, there’s more and more events happening in the city as people take advantage of the [supposedly] warmer weather. The weekend before I ventured out to Toronto to catch a screening of A Wedding Invitation at the Yonge Dundas Cineplex. Even though we were on a tight schedule, we managed to grab a bite at Santouka Ramen right before our movie. I haven’t tried many ramen places in Toronto, but this was by far my favourite. I had the shio ramen while my sis had the tokusen toroniku ramen. Mine was super yummy, but I found myself stealing pieces of meat off my sister’s plate. =P

The day after I was debating all morning whether or not to head down again for Burger Day at Artscape Wychwood Barns. For $30 you can have all you can eat sliders from the participating vendors. I was partly tired from the night before, partly lazy, and partly unwillingly to risk the unpredictable weather. Somehow my friend A convinced me that it was an indoor event, so at least getting rained on was something I could cross off my list.

Well –

Needless to say, it wasn’t an indoor event. In fact, the moment we stepped out of the taxi and proceeded to join the lineup to buy our tickets, it started to pour. It was a good five minutes of torrential rainfall, which meant both of us were completely soaked from head to toe. Even though we eventually found cover under a tent and the nice vendors fed us free burgers out of sympathy, I was not impressed. Of course, the sun came out immediately afterwards, so that was another slap in the face. (T___T)

Anyway the rest of the day was somewhat better after we both dried up. Burger Day minus all the rain and mud was actually a lot of fun. A’s two roomies met up with us later and they were both really nice. She even sent them out in the rain to grab burgers for us while we stayed dry inside. Chivalry on their part, or the fact that she is terribly spoiled by her friends? LOL

I think I only managed to eat around 6 sliders that day, but it should have evened out the cost. My favourite was this one burger which had pork belly meat inside from babi&co. Sooo yummy!

This past weekend I made it down to the TIFF Lightbox to check out the Century of Chinese Cinema exhibit. I bought tickets to watch Chungking Express, which is one of my favourite films. Having Chris Doyle introduce the movie was another bonus. I saw him a few years ago during a Q&A session at the Lightbox and already thought he was hilarious. It’s great knowing his sense of humour (or maybe it’s just his alcoholism) is still there. =P

I was super happy to catch him after the movie ended to take a photo together. I felt kinda bad for his staff who were trying to usher him out when I asked for a picture. He seemed to have no problems accepting requests from women, especially since he was being followed by a legion of male fans. Haha. I missed attending his performance on his exhibit Away With Words, but I will definitely be back to check it out.

Hoping for more adventures in the city once it finally warms for good! We’ve had so much rain and brisk weather the past few weeks that it has felt more like April than June. Up next will probably be the Kariya delegation at the end of the month. Can’t wait to meet everyone. =)
