End of Summer

End of Summer

Down to the last weekend this summer! It seems like we barely had any warm weather this year. Luckily I still managed to make the most of it and enjoyed a few events in the city.

A couple weekends ago I attended my first Rogers Cup at York University. It might have been the only time my alumni card came in handy. Haha. (Although I admit the tickets were still quite expensive even for Bronze level seats.) I bought tickets for the semi finals and I was really lucky that I was able to see Roger Federer play that evening.

We got to the venue before the start of the first match, which was the mens double with Daniel Nestor. I had great seats in the shade with a clear view of the court. The match ended after two sets, so we didn’t have to wait long for the match between Federer and Lopez to start.

During the match I was pretty impressed by how enjoyable the whole experience was. After going to a handful of Jays games, I think I really appreciated having well-mannered fans sitting in the stands. It definitely felt like more of an elite sporting event than just a regular sports game. The weather that night was also perfect to be outdoors and I was happy that Federer ended up winning the match. It was a nice surprise to see a display of fireworks to end the night.

Last weekend I attended Taiwan Fest at the Harbourfront Centre. I was looking forward to all the food stalls, imaging it would be similar to the night market event a few weeks back. However, I was thoroughly disappointed when I saw that they only had six vendors set up to sell food. Two sold desserts, another two sold small snacks. The remaining two were the only ones that sold entree dishes, so the lineups were huge. The food was just mediocre, so I was even more disappointed that we had to wait so long for it. The only thing I really enjoyed was this mi gao. It was super yummy.

That same weekend I went to the CNE with my sister. It was a good idea to buy my admission tickets in advance, so we bypassed the lineups going in. It was still pretty quiet in the morning, so we took advantage of the short lineups and went on a couple of the rides. Later we stopped and grabbed lunch from the food trucks that were set up by the Direct Energy Building. My favourite pad thai fries and ahi tuna tacos! Super delicious.

For the rest of our time there, we just strolled through the rest of the grounds and enjoyed the nice weather outside. Later we took the bus and streetcar towards the Yonge Dundas Square and watched the Admiral to end our day.

Finally last night I went to see the new Cirque du Soleil show Kurios at Port Land. It took so much effort just to get to the venue, but the show itself was worth seeing. Then again, Cirque has never disappointed. It was a long day by the time the show ended, but it was definitely a highlight to cap off summer 2014. =)
