Altogether we would be spending three days up north, then heading back down to Tokyo towards the end of our vacation.

On the first day of our trip, we took the train out to Hida Furukawa. Hida Furukawa is a small carpentry town a little north of Takayama. Both towns have preserved the look from the Edo period, so it was really interesting seeing all the buildings inside the city. Once we arrived we took a quick loop around, then settled on a spot to have lunch.

Later in the afternoon, we spent more time wandering around the streets and going past the Takumikan Craft Museum and the Matsuri Hall. The entire town is really quaint and serene, but it definitely didn’t seem like a major tourist attraction as there were only a handful of tourists on the streets. One of my favourite things about the old town was the canals they have. You can even buy bread to feed all the koi swimming in the water.

Before we left, we stopped by the main square to try their famous Hida beef. Since it was also sweltering hot outside, we got a cup of peach kakigoori before we made our way back to the station.

Later that afternoon we headed to our next stop – Toyama. It was my first time in Toyama and it was interesting seeing how small it was when we arrived at the station. After dropping off our bags at the hotel, we ventured back out to find a kaiten sushi place for dinner. Toyama has many sushi restaurants near the station and one of their specialties is shiro ebi. There’s different ways you can eat the shrimp, but I think I preferred the deep fried version the most. We definitely ate our fill of fresh seafood that night! =)

One of my last big trips of the summer was to the Japanese Alps in Tateyama Kurobe.
