Stockhom – Part 2

Stockhom – Part 2

One of the cool things I really like about the area I was staying in was how convenient it was to access the station. When I had initially looked up the route to get from the station to the residential area, I realized it would be a 15 min walk uphill. What I didn’t realize was that from the station they had this service call an elevator/shuttle which takes you directly to the residential buildings. It’s essentially a free tram service that cuts through the hill and it takes only two minutes to get to and from the station. I think it was probably the most amazing discovery I had during my time in Stockholm!

Getting back to the actual touristy stuff – for my only full day in Stockholm I started the morning again at Gamla Stan. The vibe is definitely different during the day vs at night. There were a lot more tourists out at all the major tourist attractions. I should mention here that I bought a Stockholm Pass for my time in Stockholm. You can get just the pass itself to visit the attractions, or a combination pass with tickets to ride all the public transportation in the city. It’s pretty good value for your money and I didn’t end up paying anything extra for my transportation aside from the initial bus ride from the airport.

Using my pass for the first time I went and visited the Royal Palace. I decided to pay an extra 20 SEK to get a tour of the Royal Apartments. A lot of people recommend joining the tours just so you get an extra perspective on the history and significance of the buildings. I would recommend that too if you have the time. After the tour I saw the Treasury and Royal Chapel, as well as the changing of the guards. I also went inside the Storkyrkan, which is the oldest church in Gamla Stan.

For lunch I ate at the Hairy Pig Deli. This was another recommendation I saw on Tripadvisor. There’s not a lot of tables inside but it wasn’t very busy when I first got there. I ordered a main course of sausage with two tapas. I ended up getting the home smoked salmon paté and the provolone cheese. The presentation of my meal was super cute and I felt reluctant eating the pig. =P

After lunch I headed back towards Stortorget and went inside the Nobel Museum. To be honest I was a little disappointed with my visit to the museum. I thought there would be a lot more exhibits to see but it was quite limited. Maybe if I had done the audio tour it would have been more enjoyable, but overall I wasn’t impressed at all.

Later that afternoon I finally made my way to the Vasa Museum and stayed there until closing. The Vasa Museum is home to the Vasa ship which sank on its maiden voyage in 1628. The Vasa was almost fully intact when it was salvaged and brought to its new custom built home at the museum. It was really impressive seeing it in person. I can’t even describe how small I felt standing in such close proximity to the ship. The scale is just amazing.

After the museum I had time to make a visit to Vete Katten for dessert. It’s one of Stockholm’s few remaining authentic patisseries and it was definitely a treat relaxing inside with a slice of cake and tea. <3 Vete-katten

In the evening I had to head back to the apartment to wait for my luggage. I was given a time frame of 7-10pm for the delivery. Even though I was hoping my luggage would arrive early, it didn’t actually come until 9pm. By then I contemplated whether I should go back out to grab dinner. I didn’t want to grab McDonald’s by the station, so I dragged myself back to the Central Train Station and managed to find a restaurant whose kitchen was still open at 10pm. Thank you Stockholm Fisk! I had a really nice dinner of fried herring with potato purée, lingonberries & browned butter. =)
